Ford Spare Wheel Cover #46-1W

Vintage Steel custom made mudguards and fenders have many uses. Here we have a Ford Spare Wheel Cover to suit mid 1930’s Ford Cars.  Possibly an option from 1931 it became standard fit from 1934. These floppy covers were awkward to remove, re-fit or manhandle in between so there aren’t many survivors. As expressed by V12Bill on the Ford Barn forum ‘I would think that in a rain/snow storm, extra hot/cold day/night, that many metal covers were left in disgust at the flat tire site.’
It took a lot of workshop changes to accommodate a system capable of full circle rolling, not so much for when it is a full circle, but mainly for when it is a 2.4m (8’) long arc swinging around.  These are individually hand crafted guards from a flat sheet and will show some small imperfections due to the difficulty in handling the length required. At a max of 170mm wide it suits standard tyre widths. The cover has the specific Ford centre rib shape and rolled edges which could be flattened to gain a few mm of internal width if necessary. It is left over-length for you to trim to suit.
