Harley 1926-34 Rear #52-2

This late 1920's Harley mudguard profile is 7" wide by 2" deep and was used in various configurations on most models from 1926-34.  This is the 1927 version and may suit other models.   Later versions dispensed with the deep pressings at the nose end. Starting at the tail end, it is fitted with a shaped, riveted bracket and custom made and riveted hinge. The main fender blade has a slotted step down pressing at the hinge join to allow for overlap. Further forward there are scalloped pressings in the sides for the under-seat frame tubes. This fender was also originally 3 pieces, so we do the same. It’s not nice cutting our new main blade into two pieces, hand shaping a step-down for the overlap then spot-welding it back together again, but these are faithful copies. Then at the nose there is a detailed pressing to get in the narrow frame and lastly some optional angled tail light wiring holes. All up, a lot of details to get right.

As a separate note, the little (~1mm) protruding lip on the sides of the fender have been questioned. Notably over many samples these have been of different sizes, sometimes varying over the length of the fender, different each side and even missing on some samples. We have verified over many models that these lips were correct, but as at least one restorer has told us ‘I ground them off’ the number of samples with no lip appears to be growing as restorers make them smoother.
